Valentines is to Single Awareness Day as National Sibling Day is to Only Child Syndrome.
Dude, really!?!? First it was Valentines. Now Sibling Day! When am I going to catch a break with these things? 😛
79% of kids growing up in the US have siblings. A great day nevertheless. A day we are reminded that “blood is thicker than water.”
The holiday was created by Claudia A. Evart to honor the memory of her brother and sister who died. She created the not for profit organization Siblings Day Foundation. The day was established to honor those who help shape our core values and beliefs.
For us, only children, today we embrace those “Brothers from another Mother!” Those “Sisters from a different Mister!” And those imaginary friends we used to make up as siblings. Don’t deny it! Mickey was my broski growing up. I took my life size Mickey Mouse stuffed animal friend everywhere!
While we’re talking about imaginary friends; here’s a list of seven other myths (spoiled, center of attention, etc.) that have been proved fiction about only children… Okay well…(sigh) center of attention might be true. lol
In addition, I found that we aren’t alone. Did you know these celebrities are only children too (we’re famous!): Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Glee cutie (Lea Michele), Drew Barrymore, Alicia Keys, One Tree Hill star (Sofia Bush), and the comedian (Russell Brand).
Today we hug, post, poke, tag, like, share, and embrace our siblings. Only child peeps, today let us be extra grateful for the special bond we have with our parents/guardians.
Mom & Dad, I love you!
